Re: Generic MetforminFrom: Genny (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 15 Mar 2002 11:31:11 -0600
The reason Metformin (and virtually any other drug) is so expensive in the US is because of the federal government. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) forces all drug companies to test every drug. That includes drugs that are already tested and prescribed in other countries. The result is that the testing costs add on to the price of the drug. There are not too many drug companies left in the US because of the prohibitive costs associated with developing new (and often lifesaving) drugs. By the very act of keeping potentially lifesaving drugs off the market for many years, people die waiting for treatment. This is unacceptable. The FDA is a four letter word in my household! Genny
