Overweight and PCOSFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netThu, 14 Mar 2002 17:42:34 -0600 (CST)
Hi Guys, Just want to comment that not all women with PCOS are overweight (though I certainly am). In fact, that is how some of us miss out on treatment - because of the preconception that all women with PCOS are larger... and we have all seen the posts here of women whose doctor won't give them a diagnosis or treatment because they are slim or even thin. According to my endo, there is a subset of women with PCOS who are not overweight at all, and some of these women may actually have a more severe (with slightly different pattern of presentation)of PCOS - not to say that us bigger women cannot also experience severe forms of this condition - and perhaps there may even be several subsets amongst the larger women as well (I think Sonnet has commented on this in the past....?, there is also something on this in the Thatcher book). Just as some of us have clearly abnormal hormone results, and others nothing detectable, and varying symptoms and degrees of different symptoms,... this is a syndrome not a formula condition... My theory is that there are probably a no. of possible contributing genes, or other factors that affect/result in this condition and therefore there are a number of presentations. We need to be careful in having a diagnosis made, and also careful in excluding a diagnosis..... or those who may need treatment will be missed. Best wishes to all Sally
