Re: dysfunctional uterine lining

I am surprised that we have not had this question more frequently. DUB is Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding. The definition for this is almost the same as the definition for why we have irregular periods.

Our bodies produce excess estrogen (which is converted from androgens) and we have too little progesterone (this is why we take prometrium or Provera). The progesterone in mid-cycle is important because (among other things) when the progesterone begins to decrease, we have a period. If we get pregnant, the progesterone does not decrease and we do not have a period. A lack of progesterone is the reason why so many women with PCOS have miscarriages. Estrogen and progesterone work together to complete the menstural cycle.

In DUB, the uterus is constantly under the influence of estrogen and not of progesterone, this causes the uterus to continually build a lining. When the uterus is not capable of providing a blood supply to the lining, we may have a partial shedding of the uterine lining. Since this is not a complete shedding of the utering lining, it does not take as long for the lining to build back up again to the point where the uterus can no longer provide an adequate blood supply and partially shedding, etc. In this scenario, you would have different layers of lining at different ages and could have almost constant bleeding.

The good news is that after a D&C, most women resume a more normal menstural cycle. This is particularly true if you are taking steps to control your PCOS and in turn controlling your hormones.
