Re: Diane-35 and hair fallingFrom: Belle (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 4 Mar 2002 16:41:09 -0600 (CST)
PCOS seems to be caused by a problem with our insulin. Many of us now use insuin sensitizing drugs; Glucophage/metformin, Avandia, Actos. The birth control pill is not a treatment for PCOS and is not good for us in general. Diane 35 can be better for us than other kinds but it still has the potential to make our facial hair worse and to make our insulin resistance worse. You might want to do some research on this board or at http://www.pcosupport.org but I can tell you that many women here are on Glucophage (or other insulin sensitizing drug) and a drug to help reduce their testosterone - to prevent more hairloss and facial hair growth. Some of these drugs would include Aldactone/spironolactone, Propecia/proscar, and even Tagamet. I must warn you that if you are planning to become pregnant any testosterone reducing drug could harm a male fetus and should be avoided. PCOS is a problem with the insulin, as mentioned before. To address this problem, you may want to see an endocrinologist or a reproductive endocrinologist who is familiar with PCOS and the treatment availabilities that have come about in the last few years. Some women, like me, had great success with a regular GYN but there does not seem to be many. If you go to a GYN for this matter, please make sure that s/he is familiar with the current research. With PCOS you are at great risk for diabetes, higher than normal risk for heart disease and endometrial cancer. It is important that you are under medical supervision for this condition.
