I am amazed...From: Denise (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 28 Feb 2002 15:21:46 -0600 (CST)
I am amazed at all of the information that I am finding here. It has been a very long road for me. Just last month I got a positive diagnosis for PCOS. For years doctors have been treating me for menstruation irregularities (4 per year if I was lucky), hypothyroidism, high blood pressure, facial hair, weight and so on. Never had one of them mentioned the possibility of PCOS. I had started seeing and new gynecologist and he ran some tests and said that I needed to get to an endocrinologist immediately, my insulin levels were at 100 when the norm is 10. My endocrinologist started me on metformin and from what I'm reading it seems like a high dose over a short period of time. He had me start at 500mg every day for a week then every week after that up it another 500mg until I got to 2000mg with no tests to see how I was reacting to the medicine inbetween. I called him for some information on metformin in the treatment of PCOS and he told me that I wouldn't be able to get any since I wasn't a doctor and a bunch of other back talk about how some of my reactions to the metformin would eventually go away. Needless to say I am changing doctors, due to some research I found a local doctor that specializes in PCOS and doesn't hesitate to answer any question. I'm sorry for the long post but I just wanted to share how happy I am to have found this forum and that I am not the only one going through this hideous disease. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
