Re: To Belle Re: Precocious pubertyFrom: Belle (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 27 Feb 2002 21:04:22 -0600 (CST)
I have looked everywhere I can think of from home and I cannot find a published link between PCOS and precocious puberty. There are some common elements between the two. There is a connection between weight and precocious puberty as well as weight and PCOS. http://www.emedicine.com/ped/topic1699.htm There is also a link between the offspring of women with precocious puberty and Type II diabetes, like the connection between Type II diabetes and PCOS. Probably most significant is that there is a connection between CAH and precocious puberty. CAH can lead to hirsituism and amenorrhea (like PCOS) I was able to find one study on acanhosis nigricans (the dark spots that some women with IR have), and in this study, they took 95 women (many with PCOS, excluding Cushing's syndrome, adult onset congenital adrenal hyperplasia, ovarian tumors and hyperprolactinemia) and out of this group, only 1 had precocious puberty. http://www.kfshrc.edu.sa/annals/176/96-335.html I cannot find that children who go through precocious puberty have an increased risk for PCOS, nor that women with PCOS have had precocious puberty. I know that there have been discussions either on this board or on the board that we used before this one that had discussions about when women with PCOS began puberty and the results were that one or two who answered had started their periods before age 11 but a number of the women started late (after age 16). This of course is very unscientific. It will be interesting to see how this research comes out. I will try to keep my eyes open for it. :) C-peptide usually correlates with insulin levels because when the pancreas converts proinsulin into insulin, they also form C-peptide.
