Ruth,

you NEED medical treatment! change doctors and do it as soon as possible.

i was actually diagnosed at a very young age (pre-puberty) but was not treated until jan of 1999 when i stumbled across an article linking PCOS with insulin resistance. at that point i had *never* had a natural period (although i had been on the birth control pill on and off for several years, and had used provera to induce periods as well). i also had type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and weighed 363 pounds! i was 24. i went to a reproductive endocronologist ad DEMANDED treatmet. the doctor put me on a medication called glucophage (the generic is metformin). he told me to low-carb and exercise. he did a full hormone panel and essentially told me to come back when i was ready to begin infertility treatments.

for about 6 months i expected this drug to magically fix everything that was making me sick. i was terribly moody and generally depressed. i came to this board for support. i learned a lot, and eventually decided that if i didn't try something i was going to die. i started watching my carbs, i am a horrible dieter and was determined to NOT stick to a diet, just to try to be more AWARE of how many carbs i was eating. i did more research and found walking was a very good thing for metabolism. i tried these things (albeit spordically at times =)

fast forward...in jan 2001 i began to have periods naturally. i had lost about 70-80 pounds and no longer had high blood sugar and began to slowly wean off my blood pressure medicine.

it is now feburuary 2002, i have lost 100 pounds, am much happier, my hair growth has slowed, my hair loss has stopped, the dark patches of skin on my body are almost gone as well. in nov 2001, my husband and i conceived our first child (after being married for 7 years).

i guess what i wanted to tell you is that you CAN get better! it is not an easy road to travel, there are no short cuts and you will have good days and bad ones, but IT CAN BE DONE! please utilize this board (and feel free to email me as well if i can help in any way, or if you just need support) for education and support. but most importantly, find a doctor who will listen. there is NO reason you should have to suffer with this disease. maybe some of the ladies here can help you find a sympathetic doctor in your area. please don't lose hope!

love, paula
