Re: breastfeeding and glucophageFrom: Lis (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 26 Feb 2002 03:40:22 -0600 (CST)
Paula You can contact your local La Leche League leader - they have lots of useful information on breastfeeding. They were very helpful to me when I had to have some major dental work under sedation whilst breast feeding. They have information about drugs and their impact on the baby. Things to bear in mind when deciding whether to take drugs whilst breast feeding: - does the drug get into the breast milk? - how old is the baby? A newborn baby's liver is not able to eliminate the drug as well as an older baby can. - how big is the baby? A smaller baby will receive a bigger dose in relation to body weight than a larger baby. - is the breast milk the sole source of nutrition? As a baby gets older and starts to take some solid food, the baby will take a smaller proportion of its' food from the breast milk. BTW, I breast feed both of my two girls until they were roughly 2 years old (I wasn't taking any medication). The teeth aren't a problem - they all try to bite once or twice, but they soon get the message that if they bite, that breast feeding session stops IMMEDIATELY. They very quickly learn that biting isn't allowed! I eventually stopped breast feeding my youngest when she turned two, as the PCOS was starting to cause some problems again, and my Doctor wanted me to start taking Dianette. Good luck, breast feeding is definitely worthwhile!
