Re: breastfeeding and glucophageFrom: Beth (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 24 Feb 2002 23:05:18 -0600 (CST)
Hi Paula! Things must be going well with the pregnancy, so happy for you!! Most articles / research recommend stopping Glucophage during pregnancy and instead use diet/insulin to regulate blood sugars. I know some Drs. do suggest it for the first couple of months with PCOS women, until the risk of miscarriage has passed I believe. (don't know about birth defect risks) Everything I have read so far has indicated that the effect of Gluc on kids isn't known. Many articles say it's not know whether or not it passes into breast milk or not, but a few do say that it does. If you really feel better while on Gluc, definitely weigh that into your decision process!! The baby can thrive just fine on formula if need be. You feeling well is definitely VERY important.
