Re: Another HAIR questionFrom: tera (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 18 Feb 2002 14:01:48 -0600 (CST)
Hi! I also have tons of hair like you do. I have to shave my face everyday. At first I was able to keep up with it by tweezing but soon I was having to spend a half hour or more each morning in front of the mirror. I went on a missions trip to India and I knew that I was not going to be able to spend that much time in front of the mirror so I started shaving. I also have hair on my neck, on my shoulders, belly, breasts and now my back. I went to school for cosmotology and I agree with the other women that waxing is a good solution BUT it costs money to have it done professionally, it does not last as long for us as it does for women with normal hormone levels, you have to grow out your hair so that it's long enough for the wax to be able to grip it properly and very coarse can be difficult to wax. If you choose to wax (I wax some areas and shave some areas) go to a beauty supply store like Sally's Beauty Supply. They sell a creme wax that you either warm up in a pot that you buy that you plug in or there are some brands of wax that you warm in the microwave. You do not need a liscence to buy it. Only get the creme wax! Do not get the wax that looks like a gel because it may not be strong enough to use on really coarse hair -- it's not strong enough for mine. The gel stuff is okay for shaping brows and taking off softer vellum hair but not the really coarse hair. I do not wax my face. I'm a professional and have waxed hundreds of faces. Believe me, if the hair is REALLY coarse like a man's beard you *usually* have to grow it about 1/8 to 1/4 inch for the wax to get a good hold in order to pull it out. If you have a beard like a man do you want to grow it out that long for the world to see for the purpose of waxing? Not me! This might be worth it if the results last a month or more but for many PCOS women the hair grows back VERY QUICK! One more thing on waxing vs. shaving -- It was a big debate when I was in Cosmo school as to whether or not shaving will make your hair grow in more coarse. Even the text books we had offered differing opinions. The conclusion that we came to was that it was a wives tale! Granted, this is just the *opinion* of one cosmo class so please don't squash me if you have a conflicting viewpoint! :) When you shave, you are cutting the hair straight across so when it grows back you feel that straight edge and it feels thicker. When you wax the hair grows from the root and is more pointed at the end so it feels thinner even though it is not. My facial hair has NOT gotten any thicker from shaving - it was thick to begin with. I have heard from some women on the forum that laser has worked well for them. It is pricey and it is supposed to last a LONG time but I've heard that eventually the hair will probably grow back. But it certainly sounds very promising. This is probably much more info than you wanted to know about hair removal but I know a lot about this subject! E-mail with quesitons! God bless! Tera jasonandtera@att.net
