I went off of Met and lowcarbed for a year while I stayed on bcps and Spiro. I had crazy erratic bleeding and lost 50 lbs in a year. I finally quit the meds, and lo and behold, I was having 28 day cycles but no ovulation. My cycle began to reassert itself with the help of lowcarb. I went back to the doctor to try Avandia. My testosterone was helped somewhat by lowcarb--down to 88. I was still on lowcarb and was prescribed 2 mg Avandia to take with 1000 mg Glucophage XR (I had terrible GI effects all 9 months of my therapy with regular Glucophage). My endo was sure I could gain 8-10 lbs but I stayed on lowcarb and continued to lose--about 9 more pounds. I took these meds beginning midcycle and got AF on schedule in July. I was taking Avandia in the mornings and Glucophage XR with dinner. I did not get AF in August and my pregnancy test was negative. So I started taking both drugs at dinnertime. I did not get AF in September, but this time I was pregnant! I have just crossed the line into my third trimester, due May 10. All of my doctors were thrown that I would miss a period but then start up a perfect ovulatory cycle, but there it is. I credit taking both medications at once with the change; I figured they could duke it out. ;o) I don't know what your thoughts are on lowcarb dieting, but even if you just cut out really sugary things you will be helping the meds to work better. My endo said that taking them together can help a lot of women not gain weight; Avandia alone has a higher risk of it, he said. Avandia works on the muscles and Glucophage works on the liver to regulate insulin, so when you take both you are giving it the one-two punch to get at both of the tissues in the body that can store sugar. I have to say that I felt fantastic on this combo and can't wait to get back on it. I can be on Glucophage and nurse, but not Avandia. I won't go on one without the other. Of course, this treatment will have one new side effect--for the first time I will actually have to THINK about birth control! Good luck and let us know how it goes!!! I think you have a great doctor.
