Re: Glucophage HELLFrom: jodi (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 11 Feb 2002 12:52:32 -0600 (CST)
I don't know if it's safe to say that Glucophage works along the same lines as Antabuse... Samueal thatcher compares them in his book to point out that the crappy side effects (ha ha) of eating too many carbs while on Glucophage might have a sort of cognitive-behavioral action... ie, you will begin to assosciate chocolate cake with feeling awful and you will stop eating chocolate cake. Glucophage does what it is supposed to do - keep blood sugar/insulin levels in check - very well; I don't know that Antabuse has any theraputic benefits besides making a person ill when they drink. That aside... Raising your glucophae will likely make the problem WORSE. I say this based on the experience of doubling up doses to make up for missed doses and suffering the ensuing stomach distress when normally there would be none. As for what is causing your problems, it might be carbs, or it might just be that you can't eat some foods while on gluc. These foods are different for all of us. I can't eat "delux" macaroni and cheese. This seems to be the ONLY food I can't eat any more... that's why I think of it as a certain food thing rather than a carb thing. IE, spegetti causes no problems. Boxed mac and cheese with the powder cheese you mix up yourself causes no problems. But the mac and cheese that comes with the foil pouches of cheese... forget it! - jodi
