Re: Glucophage HELLFrom: Anne (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 5 Feb 2002 07:08:43 -0600 (CST)
TJ, I also have no gallbladder (mine was removed because it didn't work, I didn't have stones), and I'm on glucophage xr 1000 in divided doses. I tend to have the problems you mention even without glucophage due to the absence of a gallbladder. Suggestions - take the first dose with breakfast not lunch, drink a full glass of water. Take the dinner pill in the middle of your meal. Eat 2 pieces of fresh fruit a day (mid-morning snack and mid-day snack) (but not bananas, pineapples, or grapes because they are too high sugar). Switch from oreos to diabetic cookies made with fructose. Watchout for hidden sources of sorbitol - sorbitol causes problems for lots of people. Even if you think you are not lactose intolerant, cut out dairy for a week and see if that helps. I only have occassional problems with the glucophage after 4/5 months. It should be stopping you from wanting the oreos, maybe you need a bit more time. If I were to eat so many cookies I would have a bad reaction (racing heart, jitteriness, etc) even with the glucophage - I do to all sugary carbs esp. corn chips and pasta. You should not be eating those things with the condition you have, they're poison. I know what you mean about the denial, I too thought the glucophage gave me a license to eat poorly in the beginning. What it does is make it easier to not eat poorly once it balances you out and you feel better and you will not want those "good tasting" things that make you sick, you'll just get used to feeling good. My endo said I was doing the best of all her patients taking glucophage mostly because I stuck with it. - Think of what is at stake and stick with it. Good luck. Anne
