Question on Glucose Tolerance TestFrom: Sally (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 4 Feb 2002 22:50:47 -0600 (CST)
>>Fasting levels for Glucose is less than 120 mg/dl (< 6.7 mmol/L). >>Normally the fasting level is around 80. >> >>Between 30 min to 1 hour after the glucose solution (sugar drink), >>levels should peak at 160 - 180 mg/dl (8.9 - 10.0 mmol/L) >> >>Glucose should return to fasting levels in 2 to 3 hours. >> Tera, Thanks for your great information. What does it mean during a fasting glucose test if the glucose levels do not go up? For example, when I had the test, the glucose levels started around 89 (fasting), then after 30 mins went down to 84, 1 hour went up to 100, then 2 hours went to 83. Several hours after got really bad headache and lethargy. Unfortunatley they didn't do insulin testing at the same time so don't know what that was doing. (if my endo ever decides to repeat this test I will ask her about this). Could this indicate a very strong insulin response - all glucose got taken up very rapidly and then hypoglycaemia? Or just a variation of normal. Fasting insulin level was normal. I was not diagnosed as insulin resistant, however my endo believes that all persons with PCOS have insulin resistance to some degree, hence she still prescribed metformin. Thanks again.
