Re: Declined Life InsuranceFrom: Kimberly (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 4 Feb 2002 15:27:53 -0600 (CST)
Wow! That is really scary, I can't believe it! Considering 5 to 10% of all women have this condition and up to 30% show some symptoms I would say they could lose a LOT of business if all these women were aware that they had it and were as honest as you! I say this because I don't see why you should have to disclose it - as most women don't even KNOW they have it. I would say being denied for PCOS would be the same as the insurance company denying a man who shows signs of baldness and a beer belly. It's all insulin resistance, but because you are a women and there's a name to your condition you are being denied. It seems to me that most of our 'risk' factors (heart disease etc.)are that of the average man -no more no less (due to the testosterone), so under these pretenses NO man should be able to get life insurance. Crazy. I guess with all the progress medical science has made in the PCOS department that is positive, there must be a downside and this is apparently it. 5 years ago no one would have known what you were talking about, or cared. Next thing you know it's going to be a pre-existing condition and none of us are going to be able to get health insurance!
