Re: Supportive HusbandFrom: Renee (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 25 Jan 2002 22:57:22 -0800
You are such a wonderful guy!!! She's lucky to have you. You remind me of me and my husband. While we were dating I was just starting to learn that I had PCOS and what it meant. I went to a doctors visit and had just heard that there might be some hormonal imbalances. I felt a lot like your wife at that moment--not worthy of being someone's wife since I wasn't a "whole" woman and having kids would be tough. That was actually the night he proposed to me. He was afraid I'd pull away because of how I was feeling, and he wanted me to know that he was there for me, and that it wasn't important. Go to http://www.pcosupport.org. There is a ton of information there. Print some info out and share with your wife. You can learn together. I think that if you learn more about it, she'll be less scared. Having children with PCOS doesn't always mean expensive fertility treatments. Often controlling the insulin through diet and an insulin sensitizing medication can help enormously, including promoting ovulation. Try to find a good doctor for the PCOS. You can go to the same web site to find a list of physicians who are members of the organization. Also, you can see if there is a support group in your area. They could give you local doctors' names. The PCOS itself can cause some depression, and facing life challenges from a medical condition can also cause depression. Maybe she could get some counseling to deal with the emotional impact of the PCOS. I had a tough time dealing with it initially. But, I then learned that I could help myself, and it wasn't as bad as I had originally thought. And, the love and support of a wonderful fiance/husband helped enormously. It will be hard for you at times. She may get moody and b**chy, may try to push you away. Please continue to look through it to the fear behind it. She'll need you to help her get through this time. If you want to talk more to a couple who have been there, feel free to contact me off-line. Keep up the wonderful work! Renee -- Renee Cordrey, MSPT, MPH, CWS---
