Re: What would you say if you could talk about PCOS on local TV?From: Belle (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 24 Jan 2002 17:47:27 -0600 (CST)
Tell them that in the past this disorder was called Stein-Levanthal Syndrome or Poly-cystic ovarian disease. It is NOT poly-cystic ovaries. It is a syndrome that has multiple symptoms. It has nothing to do with the ovaries. Then name was determined before that was discovered. List the symptoms and emphasize that you do not have all of the symptoms in order to have PCOS. Source: http://www.pcosupport.org/medical/whatis.php#symptoms Approximately 8 - 12% of the women have PCOS. Talk about the fact that PCOS is the leading cause of infertility The miscarriage rate in women with PCOS is "45% or more". Source: http://www.inciid.org/faq/pcos6.html . It not only effects fertility but it can lead to diabetes, heart disease and endometrial cancer. "50% of women with PCOS will develop diabetes". Source: http://www.rscbayarea.com/articles/pcos.html . "Women with PCOS have 7 times thel likelyhood of heart attack and heart disease". PCOS: The Hiden Epidemic by Samuel S. Thatcher MD, PhD. Since this is the case it is important that women who have PCOS have their glucose and insulin tested, their cholesterol and triglycerides tested and it is important that they have a period at least every 3 months. Talk about the newer treatments that are available (since 1999). Many women may have been told that they have PCOS but are not aware of the fact that there are treatments. I am sure you already had this but if you need more sources. just let me know.
