question for Belle about ovarian drillingFrom: tera (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 17 Jan 2002 20:31:41 -0600 (CST)
Hi! I just read in a post that you have had ovarian drilling. I also have had it - twice. I did not know very much about my PCOS at the time and I unfortunately did not make a informed decision before I did it. I assumed at the time that my doctor knew everything there was to know about PCOS. I know that she was only doing what she thought was best and that women have conceived after the surgery but I say "nuts to the surgery!" I now have tons of sticky scar tissue like you mentioned and during my last surgery one of my ovaries was stuck to my bowel and my pelvic wall and could not be freed with the small incisions used for the surgery. I have since been told by my well informed reproductive endo that drilling is often considered to be an old fashioned surgery for PCOS now days because if you do not get pregnant it can cause more harm than good because of scarring and that it is much harder to conceive after the tissue has formed. Her job is to help women conceive and she says that if you are trying to get pregnant with PCOS you should try a Met and Clomid combo or artificial insem or IVF. She said that she NEVER recommends drilling to ANY of her patients because there are much better ways to conceive. Like you said - you will develop scar tissue from drilling. It can wreak havoc and my endo said that it may become a cancer magnet later. I have had one artificial insem which did not result in a pregnancy. I stopped because of personal and financial reasons. I did however manage to make mature eggs during the process which is something. My endo said that artificial insem may not work for me since I have sooo much scar tissue from the drilling. If I could take back my ovarian drilling I would in a heart beat. I did get regular periods for a year after each surgery and then my ovaries went back to "business as usual." My husband and I are just about ready to sit down again and discuss our options: adoption and IVF and living without children. Tough decisions for twenty-somethings. I think I read in one of your posts that you have children. Is this true and did you have your children before the onset of your PCOS? Did you have them before or after your ovarian drilling? Have you been able to get pregnant since your drilling? How has your drilling effected your body and would you do it again? For what reason did you decide to get "drilled"? I have read many of your posts and find them to be enjoyable. You are informed and straight talking yet compassionate. Thank you for that! God bless! Tera
