Glucophage and Glucophage XR are both exactly the same medicine, metformin. It's a medication that helps your body to use its insulin better. the XR is simply put into a time-release capsule so that you can take your dose all at once rather than spread out through the day.

Right now Glucophage is only FDA approved to treat diabetes. It's quite common and useful in treating PCOS as well. So far the companies haven't put forth the enormous amount of energy and money it would take to gain FDA approval for PCOS as well, but that doesn't make it work any less!

Normally when you're prescribed Glucophage a liver function panel is run to make sure your liver is healthy, just because being on this puts a little additional strain on the liver. However, if you don't have any reason to suspect liver problems, I wouldn't be *too* uncomfortable about that. Problems are very very rare.
