Minni,

He should have done some bloodwork to testing your glucose and insulin levels and other hormones (thyroid, progesterone, LH/FSH, etc) as well. The bloodwork should be done prior to beginning the medication so you have a base line to refer to.

As for the XR, it is just a time release coating--which from what I've read helps to minimize some of the gastro intestinal side effects.
