Re: By-pass surgery??From: TJ (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 13 Jan 2002 22:14:38 -0600 (CST)
Well, there is good and bad to everything. I was just recently told of a relative of a friend who had this procedure done because she was very overweight. It has been 4 months now and she is still in the hospital.. apparently her stomach perforated; they can't seem to "fix the leaks". Every time they try a new one happens. Even a sip of water ends up in her abdominal cavity and she is in a drug induced coma to try and repair her stomach. I don't know every detail of her situation, but I do know that things are not looking good for her right now and her husband and children are of course beside themselves. I don't want to be a downer for you, but it's important to know the risks. It is also true though that so many people have had it done and have had wonderful results. It is a huge, difficult decision and I don't for one second envy the place you're in trying to decide if it's for you or not. The other thing is, is it going to really make you "better?" We are driven to eat things based many times on pure habit, but also many times based on what our bodies crave. And it craves things for a reason. If you have exhausted every other option and treatment for your IR (if you are IR, offhand I can't remember if you've ever mentioned it) and nothing else is working at all, then I can see why you'd want to consider it. Just take your time and explore every feeling you have about it. Hopefully the decision will come to you without too much heartache. Good luck in your quest; one day you will know what is right for you to do. Tracy
