Help me help a friendFrom: cw (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 12 Jan 2002 09:53:29 -0600 (CST)
Hey girls, I have a friend who has had PCOS most of her adult life. She's 36. She went on glucophage for awhile. It took her 5 years to conceive, but now she has a beautiful 1 year old boy. During the time since she's had the baby, she hasn't been paying much attention to her health. She stayed on her thyroid medication. But she stopped her glucophage. She went to the doctor last week. The doctor said that her thyroid levels are a little high still. So he increased her thryoid medication. But he's ignoring her glucose/insulin levels. Even though she suffers from all those terrible IR symptoms and side effects. Her glucose is 98. Her insulin is 22. These levels are similar to mine, and I was diagnosed IR and am successfully on glucophage. How can I tell her gently, without insulting the doctor she looks up to, that she's IR and she needs to stop ignoring this? I'm afraid for her, as her IR problems could get worse if she is on a high dose of thyroid meds. I think? Anyways, please help me out here if you can. Thanks.
