Re: A PERSONAL QUESTION ABOUT WEIGHT!!SORRY,I JUST HAVE TO KNOW HERE...From: Sally (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 11 Jan 2002 19:16:37 -0600 (CST)
Hi, for me, I have been battling with my weight since I was a young teenager. The only way I could effectively lose weight was to stop eating - literally. When I was 15 I lost 15 kg by eating only one meal a day and then I maintained that loss by being very careful what I ate. Used to eat like 1/2 a watermelon and that was a meal. When I went to university living in Dormitory I gained it all back and more. Throughout university I fluctuated sometimes down to 140 lbs up to about 180. Then spent some time in China eating maining fruit and vege and unprocessed foods and lost weight down to abotu 140. Since then gaining slowly up to 200. But the thing that really scared me - about 18 months ago now was I suddenly got really bad red stretch marks on my belly and I wasn't really gaining weight (because I wasn't really eating much - ie. skipping one or more meals a day and eating healthy (well I thought it was healthy then - very low fat and low protein, and high complex carb) - and my belly was dramatically increasing in size..... and I felt SO bad. Thats wehn I started looking for answers. Before that I just thought I was still eating too much / not exercising enough. Took about 14 months (during which time I thought I was going crazy and felt continually worse but dr found nothing - "all in my head" and dr. did not believe I was eating little) but finally got a diagnosis and started treatment (including for hypothyroid) and have lost about 35lbs so far. More than half-way there! Am eating a much higher protein, low fat and lower carb (complex type mainly) diet and my lipid profile is improving dramatically - though still not good, feeling much better, and losing weight without too much effort (well, compared to before!) ANyway, if you are not overwieght now and you are pretty vigilant about how and what you eat and exercise, AND you are being treated for PCOS, you should be fine. The best thing for me was finding out that being fat wasn't my fault ie. I wasn't lazy, greedy etc. Best wishes
-- Sally
