Re: PCOS HELPFrom: Belle (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 10 Jan 2002 16:42:35 -0600 (CST)
No. Many of us are able to have children even after the diagnosis of PCOS. PCOS is the leading cause of infertility but is one of the most treatable. The main thing that you need is to take care of your body. PCOS can lead to heart disease and diabetes. Both of these can kill. It can also lead to endometrial cancer. You have found out early. There are currently treatments. Go to http://www.pcosupport.org . There you will find a wealth of information. When you find the right person to share your life with and you want to raise your children with, you will have far more options if you have taken care of yourself. Currently, many women take Glucophage. You can do a search on this forum to see what has been said about that. Metformin is the "generic" name for the same drug. This helps with the insulin problems that we have. It has been proven to help women ovulate, especially in conjunction with Clomid. Avandia and Actos are also good meds to help with the insulin problem. A lower carb. diet has beeen of benefit to many as well. If you doctor does not have you doing these things, s/he is not doing you any favors. If you have other symptoms like facial hair, etc. there are other medications that will help with those specific problems. Again, do a search on this forum to find the specific information that you need. It is very unlikely that a doctor can say that you have only a year of fertility left at 17 because at this time, there are more new advancements being made than at any time in history as far as PCOS goes. Dr. Glueck is in Ohio and he is one of the PCOS heroes. He has been involved in research from the start of our new found streak of fortune. You will not find any more knowledgable doctor as far as PCOS goes. He has a webpage that gives great information: http://blues.fd1.uc.edu/~gartsips/polycyst.htm I have a daughter who is 15 and I know what it is like for a teen to find out that they have this problem (x2, I had it as well). Check out your options before you make a decision that will change the rest of your life. If you would like to talk with someone your own age, let me know and I will hook you up with my daughter or I will direct you to the teen page, if you want. I am not sending you there right now because you can get more accurate information here and what you need are the facts. :-)
