PCOS by any other name....From: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 8 Jan 2002 17:24:19 -0600 (CST)
Okay, just because I think we need another debate in here!!! (Note I said debate, I really don't intend this to turn into a flame war of any sort, I'm just trying to generate some discussion on it.) We have talked in the past about the need to come up with a new name for PCOS, because our understanding of what PCOS is and what causes it has changed. People seem to feel very strongly on the subject (I know I do!) and I am wondering what all of you, women who have PCOS, think! Do you think the name should be changed? What pluses and minuses do you see to changing it? What would you call it? (I have heard everything from "Syndrome O" to "Hyperandrogenic Metabolism Disorder" to "Diabetes Type III!") Personally, I think it desperately needs to be changed. You know how many women come on this forum and ask about having their ovaries / utuerus removed will help them. And women whose doctors insist they don't need treatment because they have no cysts. I think we'd all benefit from a name change! My choice of name used to be "Diabetes Type III" just because I figured it would make the medical profession sit up and take more notice of us if we linked PCOS to diabetes by name, as well. But today I am leaning towards HMD, because it accurately describes what's going on with us. I definitely don't want Syndrome O, it's just as nebulous as PCOS, with a sort of air around it that makes me not want to take it seriously as an illness. Thoughts?
