Re: Any success on low carb diets? From: cw (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 6 Jan 2002 14:54:28 -0600 (CST)
I tried the low carb diet thing for about a year. At first I had great success with it. Then after a year it started to backfire. I developed symptoms of eating un-balanced. I stopped feeling good. I was losing energy due to the lack of carbs, my cholesterol was rising higher and higher, my toleration to carbs became so bad I could hardly eat them at all, and all the symptoms of insulin resistance became worse in my body. I finally decided to try glucophage/metformin. Thank goodness! I can now eat completely balanced, all signs of insulin resistance disappearing, and I feel better than I have in my whole life. Many women on this forum have success with low carbing. Although I'm not sure if both age and time has anything to do with it. I'm 43, and my body was getting just too tired to fight it anymore. Personally, I don't think insulin resistance can be controlled solely with diet, at least not as a person gets older. I think eventually it catches up. Also, low carb diets are just so low in fiber and so unbalanced. In my opinion, low carbing works for awhile, but because of it's lack of balance, cannot be something one can do for life. This is my opinion due to my own personal experiences and experiments. I'm sure you will receive many more opinions. Find what is best for you.
