Re: PCOS and no IR?From: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 30 Dec 2001 04:58:59 -0600 (CST)
Your glucose level is great, normal for a fasting test. This means that you don't have diabetes, so you're a step ahead!! It doesn't tell you anything about IR though. I've never heard that a majority of non-obese PCOS'ers were also non-IR. I haven't heard anything to contradict it, mind you, but that still would surprise me. Only about 50% of us are obese, and IR is still considered by most medical professionals to be the cause of PCOS - so I assume it must be common in women of all weights! Have you had an IGTT to test for insulin resistance? The most common theories that I have heard about women with PCOS who don't test positive for IR is that their IR is so slight as to not show up on standard lab value tests. (Their ranges really are quite wide spread.) It's possible that the IR might just be slight. Also possible that certain women are more sensitive to IR - a very slight case of it might cause definite symptoms for some. I'd also want to be sure that other syndromes etc were ruled out - thyroid disorders, Cushing's, etc.
