Re: PCOS and no IR? - IR is not always detectable, but is thought to be cause of PCOS

Hi,

having a normal result on a fasting glucose test does not mean you are not IR. In some women with PCOS the IR is not easy to detect, even with Oral Glucose Test or other detailed testing. However, probably a good indication of whether you do or don't have IR is how you feel after eating a high carb meal. if one to several hours after eating a high carb meal you feel absolutely drained, you probably have IR. If you find that once you start eating carbs you have trouble stopping, you probably have IR. I did not have detectable IR in blood work, but had all the physical symptoms.

That said, the current medical consensus is that PCOS is cause by IR, and whether or not the IR is detectable, the first line treatment amongst drs. in the know is Insulin Sensitising drugs such as metformin/glucophage, or some of the other such drugs. Eating a lower carb diet (particularly low in refined carbohydrates) is also of assistance in managmenet.

Hope this helps.

Happy New Year to Everyone.
