Re: Maybe pregnant?From: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 28 Dec 2001 23:00:01 -0600 (CST)
PCOS is thought to be caused by a genetic disorder in how your body recognizes insulin. In that sense, you always have it - but the symptoms really start around puberty. Does she have any of the other stuff: weight gain, facial hair, acne, balding, maybe thyroid problems, sugar problems, fatigue etc? (This is a FUN disease! Really!) There are others that can tell you with more certainty than I can, but I have always been told that mid-cycle SPOTTING (like a light bleed) is a sign of very high fertility, marking the release of an egg. Of course, that all goes out the window if you have PCOS and your periods fit into the wonderful category of "irregular." That can mean none at all, late periods, heavy periods, or light ones every 2 weeks. It's a who knows type scenario! Another word to the wise - When I was pregnant last year, I tested negative on home tests up until 12 weeks! I've since discovered that quite a few women with PCOS find that home pregnancy tests show false negatives for them. It's not the rule, and I should think that for almost all women those tests are still EXTREMELY reliable if they're used rght. But, if you guys get a --, and she is still showing signs of being pregnant, get a blood test done at the doctors just in case!
