My daughter is 15 and she has PCOS. I took her to an endocrinologist
because I knew how serious PCOS could be. An endo will probably be a
better choice for a doctor. I have had great experiences in the past
from gynecologists but that seems to be the exception rather than the
rule.
PCOS *causes* weight gain in 1/2 of the women. Losing weight is
difficult because so many of us have insulin problems.
Your track record of starting your period then not getting them
regularly sounds like PCOS, as does the facial hair and the other
unwanted hair.
The fact that you do not have cysts showing up on the ultrasound is of
little or no consequence. You do not have to have cysts in order to
have PCOS. The name was determined before this little fact was
determined. Also, you can have cysts and the reader does not see them.
I had over 100 cysts on each ovary that did not show up on the ultrasond
but the doctor thought something must be wrong and found them while
doing an exploratory surgery 2 weeks later.
TSH is thyroid stimulating hormone, it checks to make sure your thyroid
is not causing your problems. FSH is follicle stimulating hormone and
LH is lutenizing hormone, these two, when compared can help give a
picture of what your overies are doing. They should be very close to
the same for most of the month. Before you go, you should call and ask
if you can also have an IGTT. This is a Glucose Tolerance Test with
insulin levels. In this test, have a fasting level drawn, then you
drink a sugary drink and then they test your blood to see how your body
reacts to the sugar.
Go to http://www.pcosupport.org There is a test there that will help you
determine if you have PCOS. Look under the different options, it is
just above PCOS 101 (or something, I have to go to the dr myself, now.)
