Re: PCO without the syndrome???From: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 14 Dec 2001 00:28:07 -0600 (CST)
I'm sure a million other people have already told you this but I'll chime in as well! What your doctor told you was correct - PCO is quite common, seems to be hereditary, and usually doesn't present any problems in and of itself. PCOS is an endocrine disorder that is named poorly, PCOS *SOUNDS LIKE* PCO - a lot like it! But it's completely different. It entails problems with insulin, metabolism, androgens, and who knows what all else. One of the symptoms of PCOS is PCO. So, back when they didn't know much about it, they thought that the ovarian cysts caused the problems. They named it Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome because of that and the name stuck. Long story short, if you've got no symptoms and your bloodwork is normal, you haven't got PCOS, and you shouldn't hve anything to worry about!
