weird skin/hair everywhere symptoms (v. long)From: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 6 Dec 2001 00:57:52 -0600 (CST)
Hello - I wonder if any of you might be able to help.I apologise for this post being so long and rambly and self absorbed- I hope it is readable. I seem to have a rather weird problem/ set of problems. I've had hirsutism/pcos symptoms for about 8 1/2 yrs now all regrettably without treatment- which I'm finally about to start. But recently (within the last year) I've noticed I have hair on my back -which was thin and blond last I looked, also on my shoulders, where some of it has alas just started turning brown but still thin. Blackheads and pimples recently appeared there before the hair, like I already had on my breasts, before most of the hair there too. Basically, I'm surprised that I'm getting hair in these areas as my Dad does not have a hairy back or shoulders although he does have a hairy chest. Still, some men do I suppose. But this is not all. I have raised follicles, bumpy skin almost everywhere. My face has recently become entirely bumpy- its never been smooth but it has got to the stage where I seem to have mini or large blackheads everywhere- not just in the 'beardy' areas. I have bumpy skin but not blackheads on my whole throat and top of my chest - kind of like pimply follicles- I'm not sure how to describe this. My underarm follicles are now 'raised' and it seems they too are growing littlish hairs. I've never noticed this on a guy- is that normal- I've never thought to look. In a word, it seems like my entire body and face are trying to grow more hair- I'm not saying terminal hair- that depends on the area- but I mean that I can now feel slightly more noticeable hair -light and thin yes- here and there on the sides of my body even which is surely weird even in a man? The vellous(sp?) hair on my face -yes I do have thickening hair there in some areas but the vellous hair in all sorts of weird areas on my face - like the sides of my forehead for heavens sake- seems to be getting slightly fuzzier- I mean its not terrible-I had to have a careful close inspection under bright light to check this- but I don't understand and I'm getting very scared. It can't be my old hairline, because its too far in. I even have some darker hairs in between the side of my brows and my hair so that's strange too. I have this hair right up on the top of my cheeks, the top of my nose, possibly the tips of my ears. Again, this is very, very light hair, I'm just not sure if its normal or what. I plucked some hairs out of my forehead just to see and I have to say they were very short, white and thin thank goodness, but I think I plucked a dark blond one out of the side of my nose! OK I may have lifted it from somewhere else. Basically, maybe the blackheads on my nose, tops of my cheeks and forehead are making these hairs more noticeable to me and maybe my brows are just way out of control. Maybe. But all together with the body stuff- it is just too weird. I'm not even sure when it started getting like this because I've been more paranoid about the obvious facial hair etc etc and just wasn't looking for hair to turn up where I wasn't expecting it- on my back for example where it definitely is - especially the centre. so in conclusion- if any of you have read this far- and I do apologise for running on and on- do you have any insights? If hair is turning up elsewhere, then this may not be an PCOS thing as such.Maybe this is some other weird hair thingy- they seem to exist although rarely. Yet the blackhead, grease + hair combo strongly suggests ANDROGENS! And why the bumpy follicles in non greasy areas- areas where one wouldn't expect hair on most men? Please answer if you have any idea. Yes, I need to see a dermatologist asap, but I'm in the UK, I need to get a doctor referral even to see one privately and I'm not sure I can afford it. Well, I'll just have to because I am scared! I mean all of the other PCOS symptoms and the male pattern hair are bad enough but this is just one more thing I'm not sure I can handle.
