PCOS can killFrom: ALicia (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 1 Dec 2001 21:10:25 -0600 (CST)
Why am I saying this? Because Im living it. Some may say this is more from severe obesity, but I had my PCOS diagnosed as the main cause of my fast rapid weight gain. I was just hospitalized for 10 days for severe cellulitis in abdomen ironically this is a result of weight loss--hanging stomach--skin and edema area, that I actually was supposed to see surgeon to remove that week. I dont see people who are just my size--400s, ending up constantly in the hospital with a slew of infections and more. Now I am deaf---they dont know why--I started losing hearing acouple days before cellultis infection--have been to two hearing doctors and now I supposely have diabetes because I had two high readings over 126 while ill in the hospital. I am 33 and my body is falling apart from PCOS. I gained 350lbs plus from 1995-97 and it took years for a diagnosis. I got somewhat better losing over 150lbs of the weight with a lot to go but now my body is crumbling. The lymphedema alone has added at least 100LBS TO MY BODY!. So remember the weight Im giving you is not actual all fat. I have a two friends with severe PCOS like me. They are in other parts of the country. They are facing severe infections, lymphedema and one like me sugar problems. One has put a 100lbs of fluid on too. We are young but actually old in our health problems. The health problems are far worse then what those with simple morbid obesity face. We all diet like mad--never eat sweets --low carbs in my case and hold crazy amounts of weight on ourselves. Im hearing impaired, and, anemic and Im scared. I have been in bed for a month as a result of this latest infection. I take all my pills without fail and have been under the constant care of a good endocrinologist who has tested EVERYTHING and has me on Met and androgen blockers and I am still having severe health troubles. He has told me to not blame myself I am facing severe genetics. He says You have the worse PCOS probably in the country. I have been disabled for 4 years from PCOS. I lived normally until I was 28 years old but looking back to teenagehood and when I lost my period at age 21 I have been sick for years. I think there is a pathological form of severe PCOS that isnt being talked about or studied. I think I and my two friends are in some severe category that is barely known about. I am going to continue trying to do what I can. I eat health food as a normal course, low carbs, Im tracking blood sugars, Im getting tests to find out why I am facing all these other health troubles but I am really scared that PCOS is going to kill me because I never have been this ill before this long in my life. I had gotten better too since I have lost a 150lbs plus over the last three years and more active and mobile so this latest set back has been horrible. I also have never met anyone who suffered such a gain as I did, some close but not many. PCOS is ruining my life. PCOS is not just some womans disorder that makes all women just infertile with a little bit of fat and or body hair. It can kill.
