Tiffany,

A Glucose tolerance test takes hours. I was unable to determine if this is what you meant. The minimum length of time that it would take is two hours. You go in fasting and have your blood drawn. They use two vials for this. One with a grey top and one with a red top. Then after a set length of time (30 min or 1 hour) you go back in for another blood draw, then at two hours, etc. Each time they get two vials of blood.

CW is right, a fasting test only can be misleading. Your system can return to correct levels after hours of fasting.

High cholesterol and triglycerides can be an indication of insulin resistance. Triglycerides are a measurement of blood fat levels.

While many doctors feel that everyone with PCOS is insulin resistant to some extent, the tests are not always sensitive enough to pick up on it. Also, you should keep in mind that the readings that you have from this test can be interpreted in different ways by different doctors. A doctor who specializes in diabetes may be far more concerned than a GYN by the same readings. With this in mind, you may want to be sure to follow up with another I-GTT in 12 months.

I am confused by the fact that your doctor originally thought IR then changed her mind. Do you know what the actual numbers are?

You may still want to treat you PCOS as if your tests indicated that you are IR. I know that my daughter is only slightly insulin resistant and when I took her to a PCOS expert (instead of our regular endo.), she was placed on a lower carb diet. Her results were still within the normal limits for her pediatrician but the endo who specialized in diabetes put her on Glucophage. Now this specialist wants her to go even further. This is even though she is very thin (size 4 when we can find them!).

It was done at 8:00am and I dont normally eat breakfast but was a little shaky. Might have been nerves and because I hadn't had my coffee! I do not know about my cholesterol and triglycerides levels- I dont even know what triglycerides is. But my Dr still says that I have PCOS.
