J.D.

I haven't taken both but I did take Sam-e a few years ago before I was correctly diagnosed with thyroid disease. I can tell you that although none of the prescribed antidepressants made a bit of difference in my depression levels, the sam-e did. Unfortunately, it only made me functional, for me it wasn't a total cure - thyroid treatement was the almost total cure so I don't take it anymore. I slowly built up to 1600mg and it took about 2-4 weeks to begin to see real improvement. You need to take it on an empty stomach first thing in the morning with a full glass of water. You may experience gi side effects at first. I suggest you increase by 200mg every week/or two. It's important to take b-12 and folic acid with it. Nature Made and GNC are suppose to have the best formulations (true potency).

You should also get your thyroid checked, your "TSH" levels should be between 1-2, it seems the lab normal is BS. I was "high normal" for years and mislabeled as "clinically depressed". I have had such a great improvement with thyroid treatment, but taking the Met/glucophage was the last piece of the puzzle, it got rid of my moodiness and occassional depression.

The problem you might encounter is not knowing which is helping you most and/or which is causing the most GI problems.

You'll have to decide for yourself, but if I were you I'd start with the Met, get yourself to an optimal dose and then try the sam-e I know this means waiting which can be hard when your depressed, but it's still what I, as a non-medical person would suggest having spent more years than I can bare to remember depressed.

You have my best wishes.
