Avandia, hair/testosterone, etcFrom: Kari (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 25 Nov 2001 10:31:19 -0800
I have been on Avandia for 9 months and it didn't make the hair problem any better. Any insulin sensitizer should have the capability of reducing testosterone as the proper use of insulin allows the pancreas to make less and then should result in less over-build of testosterone. I believe my testosterone levels increased last time I stopped taking Met, so it must have been having a positive effect. I went from 8mg Avandia down to 4mg Avandia/500 mg Met last week and am planning on dropping the Avandia completely this week. I think I mentioned it before but I only gained weight on the Avandia - 30 pounds to date. Of course, I had not altered my lifestyle in any way this year when taking it. Perhaps more exercise and less carbs would have counteracted that. My RE has at least one patient who lost 50 lbs in the first 3 months on Avandia - how she did it, I do not know. One note on the off topic = I'm now 296 and i've only had to ask for a seat belt extender once, on a commuter flight. The flight attendant didn't ask "What?", she was very discrete about it. My safety and comfort (what little is available on airlines, particularly the smaller new Aerobus models) is more important than pride, at least that's what I told myself.
