Re: help, so many questions!!From: Dona (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 17 Nov 2001 12:18:46 -0600 (CST)
HI Tricia, I guess your question is ..What drugs are we taking for PCOS? Well First of all my doctor ran blood tests to be sure that I have PCOS and not just cystic overies because you can have PCO and not have PCOS. I know that sounds confusing but it's true. So fist off the blood work was done to see if I had increases androgens in my blood..which of course I did. (Androgens are male hormones such as DHEA and testosterone)The androgens are what causes all the excess hair growth. Woman who are NOT trying to get pregnant usually use a medication called Spiroloctone(it causes birth defects ..so you can't take it if TTC) to help lower the male hormones and decrease hair growth. You can also use birth control pills to help lower androgens and regulate your period. There are some new birth controll pills out now that are supposed to help with this. Secondly my doctor tested me for Porgesterone levels prior to putting me on clomid (I am doing my firt round of clomid right now ..I am on Cycle day 8).He found that my progesterone is very low and that I needed Provera to help induce periods prior to taking clomid. Thirdly he checked my insulin levels with a 3 hour insulin/glucose tolorance test. This was done a few months ago and he put me on Metformin because I have insulin resistance . Insulin resistance is the Underlying cause of PCOS. New studies are being done that have shown drugs like Glucophage (aka metformin ) also help woman who are not clinically diagnosed with insulin resistance. So your Doctor might not do the 3 hour IGTT based on these studies and just put you on Glucophage without testing you. Glocophage has been proven to help make Clomid actually work better in woman with PCOS.I have been on Glucphage for 3 months prior to starting the clomid in hopes that it will increase my chances of getting pregnant.I have read many posts on this and other forums of Clomid not working just by itself but once metformin was added the person got pregnant! I hope I helped answere your questions,Good luck to you,Dona
