Re: Would glucophage work for me?From: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 31 Oct 2001 14:31:46 -0600 (CST)
Your symptoms definitely sound like hypoglycemia to me, which can be common with insulin resistance problems. I suffered with this for years and years and it's awful! For me at least, the glucophage was a godsend. Once I started on 1500mg, those symptoms went away. I could go for HOURS without eating, something I hadn't done in my whole life before! I would think tha it is well worth a try. In any case, I believe they've no shown that glucophage is quite effective in treating PCOS even in women who don't test as being insulin resistant. So there again it's a good idea. Lastly static numbers like you have of fasting blood sugar and insulin don't really tell you anything about insulin resistance. You need to know how your body is reacting to sugar and what sugar does to your insulin levels over time. The test for this generally is an insulin-glucose tolerance test and it is done over several hours. You drink a sugary drink and then have blood drawn every 30 minutes and your glucose AND insulin tested. It's the comparison of these two numbers that shows IR. HTH!
