You should eat a high-carbo diet for 72 hours before the GTT then fast for 10 - 16 hours before your test. You should not smoke, drink or exercise before the test.

Since the IGTT contains the same qualifications as the GTT, the same rules apply.

By eating a high carb diet for 72 hours before the test, you are helping your body adjust to the carb levels that are required for the test. If you do not do this and you have been eating low carbs, the induction of high carbs can make you sick to your stomach. Lab techs hate it when you pass out or throw up in their office. :-)

It also tends to make the insulin levels and the glucose levels higher. Particularly the fasting levels.

I used to think this was "cheating" but 1) it is recommended for *all* people, not just women with PCOS and you should have been given these directions when the appointment was set. 2)You need to know how your body will do if you eat a "normal" meal. We may not always be in a position to eat the way we want to and do it is imperative that if your body is going to react badly, you have something to compensate with.

It is not recommended that you eat only carbs, but eat a diet that more like what "normal" people eat. Think about that rice or french fry or roll that you normally pass on. For the 72 hours before the test, you do not have to pass on them.
