Hi Helen,

I appreciate everything you have to say about China -- I spent a year living in Beijing in 1999/2000 and loved it, but also hated aspects of it. I did get a lot of comments about my weight/size, but after a while I figured out that if people weren't talking about that, they would have found some other aspect of me with which to be fascinated (you know what I mean). Sometimes my haircolor (reddish blond), or my breasts (which are big), were a bigger draw than my size (which isn't THAT big). The most damaging to my ego was going shopiing. Even after I lost about 20 lbs, the shopkeepers would always look at me and say, "You're too fat, you need a bigger size." It amazed me that they thought that was a sales technique that would work :)

By the end, it was very funny. And I stopped taking it personally -- especially after my 110lb mother came to visit and all the clothing sellers on Salintun kept telling her she needed to buy "bigger" sizes.

Anyway, I was going to say that I actually ate far fewer carbs while living in China. Since rice was primarily a filler dish reserved only for when you didn't get enough to eat, I found that my carb intake scaled back dramatically. With very little bread, I ate mainly veggies and meats. I know the northern Chinese cuisine is starchier than other parts, but I really found the options much more varied than here in the US, where bread is served with every meal and sugar is tough to avoid.

Best wishes. By the way, what do you do in Beijing?? How is it these days? I realy miss the place.
