Re: MY Doc thinks I have PCOS what do you thinkFrom: anne (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 5 Oct 2001 07:43:14 -0500 (CDT)
Amanda, I'm hypo and recently diagnosed with PCOS too. I suggest you pick up a copy of "Women, Weight and Hormones" by Elizabeth Vliet, Md. it just came out this month, and PCOS by Thatcher. Both are available at amazon.com Normal lab ranges can be deceptive, Dr. Vliet's book discusses optimal ranges. Thryoid disease is often undertreated, your TSH should be 1-2 on scale around .5-5.5. She also lists tests that should be done for hormones to check for imbalances such as PCOS and tests for insulin resistance. I personally disagree with some of what Dr. Thatcher writes in his PCOS book, he discounts the role of hormones, insulin resistance, and the type of food required for weight loss and insists that calorie deficit is enough. Dr. Vliet is a woman who has struggled with weight loss herself and examined the role of female hormones. Many male doctors overlook the fact that so much research has only been conducted on males, they then apply male rules to female bodies - they are different, men don't have such flucuating hormone levels. I know calorie reduction and exercise did not result in any weight loss for me despite years of trying but I have finally lost two pounds by following an insulin resistance diet (linking good carbs with protein and fat in each meal and eating snacks) and taking glucophage for a several days. Best wishes,
-- Anne
