Newly diagnosed having ultrasounds Wednesday, questions and concerns. From: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 30 Sep 2001 11:50:46 -0500 (CDT)
Hi, I'm new to this forum and have only recently been diagnosed with PCOS. I have hashimoto's thyroiditis, hypothyroidism and now find I have PCOS and am probably also insulin resistance, I'm awaiting the results of blood work to confirm IR. The PCOS thing has taken me by surprise, I have pretty normal periods although lately they are not exactly every 28 days and my PMS symptoms have changed, sometimes I hardly have any. My period is very heavy and painful for the first two days and then it is fairly scant after that, it's pretty much always been like this, so I've always thought it's normal. I'm 37 and because I've had a plethera of medical problems over the last 15 years have not attempted to have a child but would like to in the future. It's not been determined yet whether I'm still obvulating. I haven't really had a problem with excess hair, some on my chin or cheek that I have to pluck, but just stray hairs, the hair on my thighs have gotten thicker and darker though. My cholesterol was fine when it was tested last year, and my blood pressure is good too. I'm going for ultrasounds on Wednesday and Thursday - pelvic ultrasound of ovaries Wednesday and abdominal scan on Thursday. I just had my hormones retested on day 4 of my period, should have been day 3 I guess but day 3 the lab was really busy and I gave up. My LH:FSH ratio is greater than 3:1 and I have been unable to lose weight despite a rigorous workout schedule that includes both cardio and weight training (which I do with a trainer who pushes me very hard). I am scared - PCOS sounds so horrible, anything with the word ovary in it sounds scary, doesn't it? I know I've gone on long already, to the point here are my questions: Can someone tell me what the pelvic ultrasound is like? Has anyone else experienced few symptoms? Why, when seeing my hormone lab results would my new Endo. say I have PCOS (which was the first I ever heard of it) and not give me medication? Does this indicate that I should change doctors (again)? That's all for now, I'm sure I'll have more questions when my lab results come in. TIA Anne
