Hi Chris, You have a right to request COPIES only of your medical record. The originals of course have to stay with the doctor that you had seen. The primary reason why most medical offices don't let patients hand carry medical records to new offices is that they are affraid of the patient missplacing or loosing them believe it or not. Most offices feel it is safer to send directly to your new Doc. You however can request 2 copies...one for your new Doc which they can mail to him.The other for yourself. They will probably charge you a copying fee for the ones you want to have for yourself as it cost the office time and money to make these copies. My Doc charged me $25.00.You may have to go to your previous Doctors office in person to pay them for your copies that you want for yourself...but make it clear to them that you also need copies sent to the new Doc.I hope this helps and they can work with you on this issue. Going there in person they will not want a "scene" made in front of other waiting patients and will probably not argue with you.Usually your new Doc will give you a records request form to take to your old Doc.Good Luck,Dona
