Re: I have PCO does that mean I have PCOS?

The two acronyms are confusing!

PCO stands for PolyCystic Ovaries, which basically just means there are cysts on your ovaries. In itself, it's not a cause for serious worry. The statistics I have seen show about 25% of all women having PCO, which is quite high!

PCOS stands for PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome, which is an endocrine disorder with its roots in insulin resistance, an inability to use your own insulin effectively. It comes with other symptoms like acne, weight gain, facial and body hair, head hair loss, infertility, and a stack of others; As well as the cystic ovaries. By definition of a "syndrome," not everyone has all the symptoms. You could have acne but not weight gain, or ovarian cysts but not facial hair. The cysts are one symptom of PCOS that most women have but not all.
