Re: Okay.....bleeding like a stuck pig...now what??From: Munchichic (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 28 Sep 2001 09:25:35 -0500 (CDT)
Actually, from what my PCM has told me and in the research I have done, this bleeding is expected if you haven't had a period in so long. The lining of your uterus keeps builing up and because of the LACK of menses, it just keeps building up until you finally DO bleed. That's why you're having such a heavy period. In my case, however, there is no reason for the extreme flow. (mine are much worse than yours, even though that may seem hard to believe. You're fortunate to be ABLE to use a tampon. I run through the most super/overnight pads in about 15 mins. PER PAD! So please take some comfort in that!) Unlike many of you, I DO have a "regular" period. Heck, before I was Dx, I had an ongoing period that lasted for an ENTIRE YEAR without reason, and my periods are ALWAYS excruciatingly heavy. Going to the hospital or ER is futile as they will just send you home. Even though that's what they tell us to do when the bleeding is this bad--it's not worth the cost. I've been in the ER so many times because my Triage Nurses TOLD me I HAD to go. At least 5 hours later for each ER visit, I was told to go home and that there was nothing they could do. $30 and 5+ hours later for EACH ER visit---it's just not worth it. Imagine how expensive that would be for patients who have to pay MORE than that for their ER visit. It is very wise to inform your regular Dr about this bleeding, however, so they can be aware in case it gets abnormally worse. But again, this is actually a normal process because your uterus lining is just SO FULL. It's extremely dangerous to have less than 3 periods a year. You're at a higher risk for Endometrial Cancer, amongs others, and this bleeding you're having is a common end result. Perhaps your Dr should be inducing your periods with Provera on a regular basis to help prevent this from happening in the future. I would recommend calling them and talking this over. Good luck!
