Re: Dosage of glucophage XRFrom: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 17 Sep 2001 18:37:28 -0500 (CDT)
I thought I would reply to the thread on Gluc XR and just point something out: Everyone has different dosage needs, it's true. This is something that needs to be worked out between you and your doctor. Also, it's true that most people start out at a low dose and work their way up. Let me also point out that the suggested dosages (these taken both from the drug's prescribing information and medical studies run on the effectivness of Metformin for PCOS) suggest that treatment be started at a low level: The suggested dosages to start with are 1000mg for diabetics and 1500mg for PCOS patients. Then, if symptoms are not resolved at that dosage, it is gradually increased, up to 2550mg daily, until they are. Glucophage XR is the SAME DRUG as Glucophage. It is just put into time release caplets. When you take Glucophage XR, you take the same amount as you normally would take during the day if you were on regular Gluc. You just take it once a day. It's much easier to remember to take it and, as mickeyscastle pointed out, it helps your insulin levels stay much more stable. It is released slowly and constantly instead of in two or three large lumps. I have had physicians in the past make the mistake of prescribing me one 500mg pill of Glucophage XR to take because they have read that you "only need to take it once a day." That is true, but that statement refers to the time release action and not to the dosage.
