AtLast Glucometer

I could have sworn we had a thread about this a few weeks or months ago, but I can't find it for the life of me.

I picked up one of these glucometers on a whim (at $65, expensive whim!) yesterday. I admit I've been having fun playing with it and showing it off to everyone else! I will visit my mom, a diabetic for the last 40-odd years, tomorrow and see what she thinks.

My opinion: Well, it works well, and the readings I've taken so far have been quite accurate.

I was disappointed in how it all came together. I thought it was, as was marketed, a more all-in-one type deal. Basically it's just a glucometer that happens to have a lancet on the other end. You still have to draw blood, then take a sample with the glucometer part.

It was, I admit, totally pain free. I think I'm pretty sensitive and I couldn't pick, no matter how hard I tried, the point where it poked. This would make it an absolutely ideal choice if you had a child with diabetes or IR.

I did have trouble getting enough blood out of my forearm. I either have to put in a lot of effort massaging or warming the area first (no) or I have to draw twice and use both blood samples. It takes a while to draw the blood, it's got this press and release, repeat repeat repeat motion that takes a while. It's not fast like the fingersticks I'm used to.

In short, since I don't find fingersticks overly painful, and I only test every other day or even few days, I'm happier with my older, faster system. But this has its advantages too and I would definitely reccommend it if you hate sticking your fingertips. Also at least at the moment it comes with a $25 mail in rebate, which makes it much less expensive!
