Re: Metformin and nauseaFrom: Zowie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 31 Aug 2001 14:10:33 -0500 (CDT)
Hi there, While many people get used to the Met and have the nausea subside, others aren't so lucky. I started on this too in January and after nearly 2 months, the SEVERE nausea and diarrhea were non-stop since the very first pill and were occuring all day every day. I finally ended up in the ER and needed to have an IV. They even injected something to get rid of the nausea--it didn't work. It took me a week afterwards (with many meds for nausea that didn't work) to get it out of my system. So you see, not everyone gets "used" to the medication. It can just keep going on and on. If it's persistent and is a real problem, call your Dr and explain this to him/her. They then will most likely switch you to Avandia (what I've been switched to) or Actos. They are other insulin sensitizers that do not have the horrid side effects that Met does. They work a little bit differently than Met, but they all work to correct your insulin sensitivity. I just wanted to be sure that you are aware you do have other options to the Met, and that you should talk to your Dr if the symptoms are getting unbearable.
