Metformin and nausea

I have just started taking Metformin. I have been taking one 500 mg. tablet with my lunch and dinner. I have noticed a significant decrease in my blood sugar which is very good. However, I am extremely nauseous. This morning I got up and could not eat a thing. Right now I am chewing on ice to keep from being sick. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this nausea? How long does it take to get used to the med.? I am supposed to work my way up to two tablets with each meal.
