Lori- the only problem with hormone testing & PCOS is that when your endocrine system is malfunctioning, your hormone test can show up deceptively normal. You could be severely insluin reistant and still appear to have normal glucose levels and test negative for diabetes. If you are Insulin Resistant and don't receive treatment it isn't a matter of IF you will develop diabetes, it's a matter of WHEN. What did the doctor attribute your hirsutism to? Extra testosterone? If so, what does she feel is causing the extra test.?? Commonly with PCOS cases the flood of insulin that is unable to process properly causes a hormonal misfire that triggers the ovaries to pump out excess levels of testosterone. The thing that worries me about what you said is that you are being tested for diabetes every 6 months - not Insulin resistance. The problem with that is you can be treated for IR and keep diabetes at bay BUT if you have to wait until you actually test positive for diabetes, there is no turning that back. Apparently your doctor may not understand that the reason PCOS can result in diabetes is because of the IR. What kind of testing has she had you do to determine this "normal" hormone level. Sorry to seem so bulldoggish but it seems we have had to become pro-active to keep ourselves healthy with this PCOS! Susan C. :-)
